Newsflash

Joan Mitchell resigned from the position of Chair of DD&G on the 7 January 2010. She had always intended to pass on the torch after the initial work had been done. With all  her other commitments, she was finding it increasingly difficult to devote the time that she knew the work needed. The rest of the Shadow Board have expressed their thanks to Joan for all the hard work that she has done; without her vision and enthusiasm it is unlikely that DD&G would now be in such a strong position. At a meeting on 11 January 2010, the Shadow Board elected Liz Chambers as Chair, ably supported by Angela McIntyre and Alan Keith as Vice-Chairs.

Liz Chambers said "We will all miss Joan on the Shadow Board but she has given us  vision, enthusiasm,  and a strong sense of direction, so that DD&G can continue to work towards an imaginative, industry led tourism organisation." It was later announced that the private sector had already pledged over £18,000 towards a Growth Fund Application submitted by DD&G to VisitScotland this week. (See 'Contributions' page)

Background

In November 2008 the Area Tourism Partnership, together with ADGAP, was successful in securing funding from the Dumfries and Galloway Council towards a feasibility study into the formation of a Destination Management Organisation (DMO) for the region.

The project group appointed Destination Development specialists, the Stevens View Partnership to conduct the study.

The Stevens View Partnership

Widely recognised for pioneering the destination management concept in the UK, the Stevens View Partnership comprises leading international tourism consultant, Professor Terry Stevens, and strategic marketing and tourism consultancy View Marketing headed up by founder and managing director Yvonne Crook.

In Scotland, the Stevens View Partnership implemented the strategy for the country's first DMO for Aviemore and the Cairngorms, before going on to do the same for Loch Ness and Arran. Its DMO model has been endorsed by the UN World Tourism
Organisation and the World Economic Forum while the esteemed Partnership has advised on both destination development and the role, responsibility and funding of DMOs in several European countries including Denmark, Northern Ireland and Slovenia.

The results of this feasibility study were announced at a conference on 21st May 2009. Click here to find out more......
